Looking for followers or readers to your blog?

A blog with nice gadgets full of followers from Facebook, Twitter and other networks – who won’t desire? But is it what any blogger aspires? By obtaining large number of followers, do you think you are doing good promotion of your blog?

I was reading some posts from various members in NetworkedBlogs discussion board. Lena Toporikova the author of TheColorsMagazine.com asks:

“It seems like everyone right now is busy with the following-stuff. While that is sure fun to have a large number of followers I suggest that we should support each others blogs in growing by creating readership and leaving valuable comments/feedback…. is ‘I follow you if you follow me’ the best we can do here?”

This was the reason I was loosing interest in NetworkedBlogs application in Facebook. When I post other messages in discussion board, there were hardly any responses but for ‘follow me’ the thread would extend longer than Nile. But I realize that a vast network of bloggers could not be ignored like this. If it is not turning to my direction, its me who could not turn it. Brent Allard replies it interestingly:

“Many people have an “anti-salesman” reflex, which convinces them that “if my content is the best they can make it, people will surely follow their product. (see Apple Computers) Personally I disagree (although quality should of course be first) The number of artists who died starving is quite large and growing. With social media available as it is, there is no reason not to seek the largest audience you can find.”

Will you be asking for more followers for your blog or more readers?
