4th Gen Vs. 5th Gen (2 replies)
Some Says, Today's computers are 4th Gen. Developed during 1971-1990 and Now we are in 2016.We used to say 5th gen computers are about to come.. And what about pim/m, pim/p etc. We got duration of 5th Gen is 1990-present and beyond? So, which generation is nowadays computer? :p
This is common confusion, I guess.
I'm not sure, but I read it somewhere that the conference in 1962 (or something like that) decided to divide computers into different generations based on the main electronic device they used. Thus,
vacuum tubes - First Generation
transistors - Second Generation
integrated circuits - Third Generation
LSI & VLSI -Fourth Generation
ULSI - Fifth Generation
Apart from the main electronic component, fifth generation computers were supposed to have:
- artificial intelligence
- able to use natural language
- Gallium Arsenide or genetically engineered protein molecules to be used in place of silica
and so on.
Among the features, we see the computers today started to exhibit these features in some level. But still I guess, we are yet in 4th generation and fifth generation is still future generation.
