How to create sticky post for Joomla blog

Ever wondered how posts are made sticky in Joomla platform? Its simple and useful too!

Sometimes, you might wish to show off a post for longer times or sometimes for ever. You can convert your normal post into sticky with a simple trick. Joomla assigns an order to each post you publish. Depending upon your configuration the latest posts are displayed at the top or the oldest posts are displayed. Here lies the secret. You just need to break the order of posts for the post that you wish to make sticky.

Because the posts are ordered 0 to the number of posts, you can start negative numbers on order field and a post with –1 order will always be at the top than order 0 post (in case of latest first setting). So you can arrange your sticky posts with negative order and follow the normal course for other posts. This will make your blog display some posts static and others changing as you go on publishing newer articles.

To change the order of posts, go to the article management screen. Create a new post or look for a post to make it sticky. Check for the number in order column. Delete the existing number and type –1. If you want another post sticky which will remain even above the currently selected post assign that post with –2 order. Now look at the header row of the table. You will find a small diskette button (save button?) to save the order. Click on that save button and check your blog. You should see your sticky posts activated now. Congratulations!

While I am quite au fait with WordPress, Joomla is a bit of an enigma to me. It seems to have taken a bit of a back seat to the juggernaut that is WordPress, but I also see that there are more and more themes and plugins becoming available for Joomla, so it seems to be taking a leaf out if the book of WordPress, and is evolving similarly. There is no point in re-inventing the wheel, and I am sure 1000′s of loyal Joomla users are only too happy to have their favourite open source content management system evolve for the better.
