How much your domain name cost?

It’s always wondering to see huge amount of money flowing in domain name business. How anybody is ready to pay off thousands and millions of dollars just for a name bought for $10? Is it name that matters? Was Shakespeare wrong to say:

What’s in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;

-Shakespeare

The domain name market proves Shakespeare wrong. It is not the entity, not the function it provides, but just a name! Is domain name anything else other than simply a name? Then how they cost so much?

Anybody is really startled and stunned to know internet marketing firm QuinStreet purchased Insure.com for $16 million just a year ago. Look at the price below and the GREAT Domain Names which deserved that price:

Top Ten Most Expensive Domain Names

1. Insure.com, sold to QuinStreet for $16 million in 2009.
2. Sex.com, sold for $12-$14 million in 2006.
3. Fund.com, sold for $9.99 million in 2008.
4. Porn.com, sold for $9.5 million in 2007.
5. Business.com, sold for $7.5 million in 1999.
6. Diamond.com, sold to Ice.com for $7.5 million in 2006.
7. Beer.com, sold for $7 million in 2004.

How much a domain name costs?

AllBusiness explains on one of its post:

At one time, all domain names cost the same: $70 to register the name for the first two years and $35 a year thereafter.

Today, however, increased competition in the domain name market means you’ll probably pay less to register a domain name. Some registrars charge less than $10 per domain name, and some charge even less if you buy more than one domain name at a time.

There’s a catch, however: Many domain name registrars make money selling extra services, and it isn’t always easy to figure out what you’re buying. Some registrars, for example, combine low registration fees with mandatory Web hosting packages — you’ll pay the hosting fee even if you don’t want the service.

Got the idea? This is ‘world’. Millions on one end and some cents on the other. Did you ever checked how much your domain name costs?

I got interested to test it with some of online tools. Immediately after googling ‘Domain Value’, I was with the tools.

1. Kongland.com

OK. I’m flattered. I have a domain name that somebody valuates in thousands. I know different tools look on diverse parameters and might present different values.

I got interested to check the value of my website too! How much would www.icttrends.com website cost?

2. SiteValueCalculator

Its not bad either. Now is there anybody to buy ICT Trends? Huh.. smile_omg

It is a fun sometime to go off track and play with something. Have you checked the value of your domain name and website? How much did you find it?

I believe domain name costs as much as someone is willing to pay for it :)

Yes lena, this is the only rule to determine the cost of domain name. But at the same time the other half too is equally true:

“Domain name costs as much as someone is willing to sell for”!

I always spend ages searching to save a few dollars on my domains. The last .com I bought cost me about $6 for 1 year, which is only $2 less than it cost the year before. That doesn’t put much value on my time does it…

But when I come across a domain already registered, I ignore it, which I think is a mistake – many domains out there have been bought to be sold and when the sellers can’t off load them they’d be willing to let them go for just a few bucks above the price they paid. It’s really quite annoying that it isn’t easier to trade domains like that – there must be so many wasted word combinations like that and that means less choice for new registrations which in turn pushes up the value of the others.

Until the new regulation enforcement, the trend of reserving domain names to trade was in height. People snatched the names of celebrities and companies with an intention to sell them for highest possible value.
Though the days are not same now, but still, the domain name business is not yet down to the earth. I believe, the price of domain name will be determined considering how much work one has put into it. For example if you get a domain name which has already got PR 4, won’t you be interested to pay lot more than a fresh one?

Sometimes I feel it a good entertainment to check values from those tools. But we should not forget that they are ‘technical value’ not market value. The real market value of any product is exactly what buyer is willing to pay and seller ready to accept.

Yeah, it is less than I paid for it. It is because I do not know how can I use it back then — I even did not know about domain parking so I sold it.

These services do not accurately reflect the "value" that investors would be willing to pay for a generic domain term like "insure.com". Both these tools are completely off base. Congland says insure.com is worth $48,675 and the other tool says its $1,388. Give me a break. Obviously their information is inaccurate. You guys can see for yourself on every domain in the list they are horribly wrong.

It takes a huge amount of time for your domain name to reach that value, not to mention the time and dedication you have to put into it everyday. There was the domain bubble back in 2000 or something, when you'd buy simple named domains like "dictionary.com" or "books.com" and you could potentially make a fortune.
