Google Changed Search Result Page, How to Get The Old Back?
I noticed it just today here in Kathmandu, that the search result page of Google is drastically changed! A nice Google logo is placed on the left hand side just below the navigation bar to the left of search input box. A left panel is introduced to make search even enjoying. Now you can filter results like Everything, News, Images, Videos, Blogs, Updates, Discussions etc. Similarly it is possible to filter with respect to time as well. Now you can display the results from within 24 hours or past week, past month, past year and so on. Page Preview feature has made it possible to view the sample of page you are going to visit. Lots of changes indeed!
Another useful feature I noticed improved is ‘Search within results’. It was what I always felt when making some serious searches. Its great now!
The right panel of Search Result Page is blank for now. I guess if Google is going to use it to show Ads?
These new changes has thrilled to many and I found some are even worried. One genuine reason for somebody to dislike the change is ‘huge waste of whitespace’. This has given problems to browse Search Result Page on small screens. A_N_M complains on Google Support Forum as:
I don’t think I’d care if they did it to my desktop machines, but on my netbook, it basically renders the results page useless. Here’s hoping they get rid of this mess, or at least make it optional.
dazormiq grumbles if Google is heading towards the direction for what he hates Bing:

There are lot more disagreements and dissatisfaction for Google changed its search result page without providing options for user if they wished to stick to older look.
Do you think Google will reconsider and revert? Or will it provide options for its users to choose if they love the new look or would like to stick with old one. Or do you think Google can skip everything unheard and just proceed?

On my laptop PC I don’t find anything against the change and feel Google made the life bit easier. The grumbles are more from users with palm devices.
Thank you william for your words.

I wasn’t sure at first, but I quite like it now. It is clearly inspired by Bing, so I guess Google is at least a little concerned about the competition.
One good thing. The ability to quickly filter to just look at news articles, discussions, blogs etc… This is going to bring more traffic to blogs. Google seems to like blogs anyway, and now they are going to be an even more important tool.

Certainly the change has made to search on blogs much easier. The filter capability has added much strenght on search. The only thind disliked by different people is of waste of white space. Do you think Google will further change to ensuer better use of space available on screen?

This is the big downside to the web isn’t it. Ironically, as technology progresses screens are getting smaller again. I think the only solution is for Google to dynamically change the style sheet so that smaller screens just get the search results…
Alternatively they could give less room to the sponsored results…. But they wouldn’t do that would they

We should not expect to reduce the room for sponsored results because we don’t pay to use the service. They are the sponsors who pay Google for us to consume service. Itn’t is like that the other way out?
A solution, however, is much desired. All they need to do is just to remove those white space. As you said, they could have different stylesheet for different screen size.
Yes Mark, interestingly, screens are getting smaller as technology advanced. But in case of computer everything is getting smaller, isn’t it?

I think we are stuck with the new version, and the old is a thing of the past. I do not like the new version, as the new sidebar prompts searchers to search differently than before. In our market, the search results for some of the keyphrases are a bit skewed when using some of the sidebar methods.

I agree with the comment about Netbooks, but on my laptop the new layout looks great!
I hate having things down the side of my screen though. I’d much rather it going along the top of the search results page. They still have the ‘Web | Images | Videos | Maps | etc’ at the top of the page, so why not just replace that?

I like the newest one more so I think I will keep it. Maybe it looks different on a PC or a Notebook, but I haven’t noticed that my results have changed.

At first, I didn’t really like the new Google Search Results page and was wondering if there’s an option to turn it back to the old one. But now I’m getting used to it, and if ever there will be an option to revert back to the old or stick with the new, I’ll go with the new one. I’m beginning to love the easy access to its filter options.

I wouldn't worry because the Google team like to change it's home page just for kicks. Every time there is any sort of a holiday or special occasion they change the page. No big deal.
