Does your blog load too slow?
[ad code=2]
Measure your website speed
It was a severe headache when I had to wait for more than three minutes for my blog to load completely. It happened early in the morning. It was felt the sluggishness since last two days. I wondered if anything went wrong in my site.
Remembered the way theme was installed. An error message “Theme is broken” was encountered when activating. I loved that MadBlogger theme but it became the first suspicious element when I found my blog is loading too slow. Decision to change a theme, all of a sudden, is not a soft piece of cake! Tried to test first few sets of remedies:
Browser cookies might get conflict and appear the load time longer than it really is. Thus, I cleared the cookies and histories.
Might be, it is browser issue. I was using Google Chrome the fastest browser in universe. Still, I downloaded the Firefox 3.6 and try to confirm.
Database might cause longer load time. Thus I analyzed the database and optimized it.
Disabled many plugins each in turn. Most of the times plugins are the reason for delay. Disabled many of the plugins each in turn and tried to analyze if any particular plugin is causing this.
If it is only for me that blog is realized slow? @che2on in Twitter suggested to check for the requests and traffic if the access is overloaded. Thanks to him for his prompt action and cooperation. He is really very helpful man!
After doing everything I could, I was desperate with the failure. Now, the index finger pointed to the THEME. I was compelled to change MadBlogger theme with the current one. But to my utmost dismay the problem is smiling with all those yellow teeth, as it was.
Now for sure, the cause must be the host. I had purchased HostGator account a couple of weeks ago. I know they are great and provide fantastic service. But problems may arise anywhere. I send a direct message on Twitter and logged on to the live chat support. Their support is superb!
Thanks to Wassim Do for his prompt action and support. He traced out the problem. It was with my ISP that I never suspected. My internet connection is ADSL and it is working perfectly with all other sites. Wassim sent me the Traceroute details.
Thanks to the tweeples @che2on and @bloggingjunkie who tested and responded to my request on Twitter. They found the load time perfect. I was relieved but still I did not have something that could test the load time, and experience in first hand.
Finally, I found a tool (@bloggingjunkie pointed out) that lists you the load time for each of your website. Its very handy and can save you if ever you are in similar troubles!
iWebTools provide a speed test tool. No need to register, nothing to log in, just open the site and list the URLs of your websites then, hit ‘Submit’. Done! you’ll instantly get the results that tells you which of the site took how long to load.

I made a speed test for my blog www.icttrends.com, http://new.psexam.com and the website www.psexam.com. You can easily imagine how happy I’d been to see the results as below:
There are many factors to increase the loading time of your blog. You need to take action to all of these areas to trace the problem and troubleshoot. Now, I’m going to talk to my ISP and solve the problem for me. Anyway, now I can be calm, at least, the problem is only for me and the blog readers are not hampered. Thanks to every body for the support!

Browser cookies might get conflict and appear the load time longer than it really is. Thus, I cleared the cookies and histories.

Sometimes it does, but I’ve recently changed the hosting providers and got a dedicated server for all my blog.

Dedicated server for all of the blogs? That must be a great experience!

When I read the first few paragraphs of this blog, I already suspected it was your ISP and I was right.

Hi Suresh,
I see that you have finally found the source of your load time issues! It was sometime last month when you were using Blogger that you started trying to detect this issue. That goes to show that if you stick to it you can root out the problem. I’m really happy for you so that you can put this issue to rest.
Good detective work!

That’s it Ileane. I was wondering why it is slow for my blog when I had seen some blogs with tons of widgets and they are happy. I never thought the ISP might be the reason that is causing sluggishness for some particular sites. Anyway, experiences build up a man wise!

Hi the checker you’ve used to check your site loading page was really cool then. Thanks for sharing that stuff and this information.

Thanks for that link, I’m always a little nervous about my load time because it can really frustrate new visitors. Proud to say that my site loads up in under a second! Think I’ll celebrate by installing 20 plugins

Sometimes pages load too slow due to some plugins. It is always best to delete the unused plugins. I had once experienced slowness in my blog and i was much worried. I then disabled all plugins and enabled them one by one.

Thanks Baba…. your information of deleting the unused plugins is new to me…. I’ll try this out.

Disable all plugins and enabled them one by one seems to work.

There are so many factors that come in to play when your site becomes unbearably slow. To improve the speed performance why not try the WP-Supercache (if you are not already) which can speed up your site considerably – especially for search engine visitors.

Where can I find cool theme for WordPress? There are very cool themes, but sometimes inconvenient to set up. I tried recent versions of Designora, My Office, Red Steel, DesignPile, also I have tried also Heatmap – simple, but made for adsense. Very rarely we can see something convenient but rich in options.

I remember having similar difficulties with my ITIL Consulting blog. It took way to long until it published new postings. But then I founded out, that I just had a very long ping list. Now I just wait for 1-2 min but then can be sure at least, that the posting shows up in google.

Thanks for the post Suresh – for a while I’ve been thinking my wp blog is a bit slow loading. I’ll work through your point and see if it speeds it up.
Obviously load time is important for real people, but do you think it also influences search engine rankings?

Google included load time as one of the factor for ranking that obviously leads the load time to influence SERP.

Thanks for the ideas – I’m going to look into this. Page load speeds seem to becoming an increasingly important SERP factor.

Hello,
I’m new to blogging, so I find articles like this fascinating. Have you tried googles adsense? I would like to, but was wondering if it would slow me down?
