Adsense Does Not Allow Kontera on Same Page
- Image via Wikipedia
I don’t know how I landed on a post in Julius Rocas’s Blog The Four-eyed Journal. The post is Kontera In-text Ads Can’t Be Run with Adsense (updated). It astonished me to learn the fact that Google does not allow!
It was just two days ago, I wrote about the reduction of payment threshold by Kontera and on a response to comment, Kontera people suggested to remove Infolinks to get the optimum return. And now I am completely confused.
Julius displays the email reply from Adsense on his query to clarify if these both ads can be displayed on same page.
According to our program policies, Kontera ads may not be displayed on the same page as Google ads on your site. However, you are welcome to display those ads on pages of your site that do not include Google ads.
There are plenty sites that are displaying Adsense as well as Kontera ads. Even I was publishing both the ads on my sites. Now I have turned off in-text Ads for some time until it’s confirmed. When he insisted with these facts the second email reply was:
Regardless of what representatives at Kontera may tell publishers, AdSense program policies do not currently permit publishers to display both AdSense ads and Kontera ads on the same pages.
Now I am forced to pull back the in-text ads for now till I find solution to ensure only one type of ads is displayed on a page.
Are you too using multiple types of ads on your blog? Are you sure you can combine the types on same page? Remember Adsense does not allow Kontera or Infolinks or any other contextual ads on same page.

Update
After going through many blog and forum posts where many webmasters and bloggers discussed this issue if it is permissible or not, I still found quite confusing responses. There are plenty of websites and blogs are using both the Adsense and contextual in-text Ads like Infolinks and Kontera since months.
Now Adsense Help page answers the question “Can I place Google ads eon the same page with other Ads?” as:
You’re welcome to display Google ads on the same site or page as other third party advertisements provided that the formatting or colors of the third party ads is different enough from that of the Google ads. In other words, if you choose to place non-Google ads on the same site or page as Google ads, it should always be clear to the user that the ads are served by different advertising networks and that the non-Google ads have no association with Google. If the formats are naturally similar, we ask that you choose different color schemes for the competing ads.
Our intent with this policy is to be as fair to our advertisers as possible and to maintain the integrity of the AdWords and AdSense programs. You can learn more about this, and all our policies, on our program policies page. Please also be aware that competitor ads are considered to be part of your site’s content and must follow our policy guidelines.
It appears that Google is concerned only on the color and layout, that should not match with Adsense Ads. If it is true, Kontera and Infolink ads are totally different on look and feel. That means they are allowed now?
In order to prevent user confusion, publishers may not display Google ads or search boxes on websites that also contain other ads or services formatted to use the same layout and colours as the Google ads or search boxes on that site. Although you may sell ads directly on your site, it is your responsibility to ensure that these ads cannot be confused with Google ads.

I don’t know but Kontera responded it was an old post and now Adsense allows both on same page. Regarding which type of ads better pays, I need to run Kontera separately for some time, then I can conclude.
Talking about restriction, it is not only for kontera. If this restriction applies for kontera, it applies for infoilnks too because both are contextual ads.

The article you read is from 2008 before Google changed thier T&C’s so your post is incorrect….

I don’t think that this is the case but Adsense has a point. If there are any more contextual it is in text ads.
Sarah on May 11, 2010
Hi, this is Sarah from Infolinks. While I can’t speak on behalf of other In Text providers, I can tell you that Infolinks In Text ads can be run alongside Google ads without violating the Google TOS. In fact, the combination of Infolinks and AdSense is currently considered to be the highest paying advertising solution for content based websites. If you’d like more information please contact us at support@infolinks.com.

Sarah

Thank you Sarah for your presence to put forward an authoritative voice from Infolinks. Google now says we can use multiple Ads from different providers if they do not confuse the visitors.
One more question please, do you have any problem if we use Infolinks and Kontera both on same page?

Kontera tweeted me informing there is not any issue anymore after Google updated their T&C. I found Blogengage and many other larger sites using both adsense and Kontera. So it is out of risk of getting ban.

Thank you for linking to my post. However, I’d like to point out that, as what others have done in their own comments, that Google has updated its Terms of Use to be more open to other forms of advertising that is allowed to be displayed alongside its own Adsense ads.
It’s best that I too, should update that post of mine.

I figured out that we can use adsense with those in-text ads after going through adsense T&Cs. What a coincidence. Kontera suggested me to test it with Adsense removing Infolinks to see the best results and the next morning I found your post. I was in complete dillema and had to stop other ads, scared to loose Adsense account. Anyway now the clouds are gone and everything got clear. Please update you post too as soon as possible. Others won’t get confuse.

wow, you made me scared as I use Adsense and Infolinks on the same page. If they are really incompatible, I will remove Adsense because Infolinks brings me much more revenue.

I was even more sacred. The coincidental encounter with two posts nearly killed me. I put those in-text ads off for all those days! Anyway its clear that it is safe to use combination.
Jonathan - Kontera on May 20, 2010
Hi Everyone!
My name is Jonathan, Community Manager at Kontera, and I just thought I would clarify a couple of things.
In the past, it was the Adsense policy that people weren’t supposed to use other advertisers, but they changed that a while back. You can check out the Adsense Policies at https://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=48182 and their Program Terms https://www.google.com/adsense/localized-terms and see that there’s no requirement for exclusivity.
In fact, many of our publishers use both Kontera and Adsense to maximize their website revenue. Kontera In-Text ads has no negative effect on Adsense earnings, but rather serve as an additional revenue stream and increase your overall revenue.
Unlike Adsense or other ad types, Kontera In-text ads are displayed WITHIN your website text and do not take up any additional space on your website. Kontera ads can run next to Adsense without competing for user interaction. Since the ads completely differ in format, there’s no issue preventing them from appearing on the same page. (as Google states in their FAQ: “You’re welcome to display Google ads on the same site or page as other third party advertisements provided that the formatting or colors of the third party ads is different enough from that of the Google ads.” https://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32849)
Furthermore, being relevant to the content of the page and the user intent of the reader, In-Text In-Text ads are less intrusive, as they only appear when the website visitor actively asks for them (when he hovers over the highlighted keyword). This behavior makes the ad more meaningful to the end user and In-text ads receive much higher CTRs compared to other ad types.
Many publishers find that diversifying their ad offering to accommodate a wider audience makes sense for their bottom line as well. The market has much to offer in terms of ad types, and you should select the solution that will monetize best, while serving your users well and not over-clutter your website.
We’ve recently introduced new terms for new publishers joining Kontera- offering the best payout in the business – 70% revenue share, $50 payment threshold on all payment types, and even a bonus for sites that generate over 25,000 pageviews coming from the US in their first month. In addition, our unbeatable premium ad inventory, from globally recognized brands (Blackberry, Dove, Kmart, Volvo, Quaker, to name a few), is exclusive to the Kontera network and deliver an even higher CPC on those appealing ads.
We invite you to join the Kontera network to experience the full potential of our superior In-Text technology.
To join visit http://www.kontera.com/publishers ; or you can email me directly if you have any comments or questions.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Cohen

Thanks for helping me find the answer to this question. Because of so many old blog and forum posts, there is a lot of conflicting information online regarding whether you can use AdSense and Kontera ads on the same site. I have been wanting to try Kontera, but not at the expense of getting my AdSense account disabled.
